Recovering at Home After Hip or Knee Replacement: What to Expect Week by Week

Joint replacement surgery is one of the most common planned procedures among older adults, and also one of the most misunderstood when it comes to recovery. Many people picture the surgery itself as the hard part and assume the weeks after will simply involve rest. In reality, the recovery period is where most of the real work happens, and having a realistic sense of what each week actually looks like makes an enormous difference in how smoothly it goes. This guide walks through a typical hip or knee replacement recovery timeline at home, from the days right after surgery through the return to normal activity, along with the practical support most people need at each stage. Every recovery is different, and this timeline is general guidance, not a substitute for the specific instructions given by a surgeon or physical therapist. Always follow the discharge plan provided by the surgical team. Before Discharge: Setting Up for a Smoother Recovery The best recoveries often start before surgery even happens. Families who spend a little time preparing the home in advance tend to avoid the scramble that happens when someone comes home and the house isn’t ready for their new limitations. A few things worth handling ahead of time: Clear walking paths of rugs, cords, and clutter, particularly between the bedroom and bathroom. Set up a recovery area on the main floor if stairs will be difficult early on. Arrange a raised toilet seat, shower chair, and grab bars if the surgeon recommends them. Move frequently used items to waist height so bending and reaching are minimized. Plan transportation home and to the first follow-up appointments, since driving is off-limits for at least a few weeks. Line up help for the first several days, whether that’s family, friends, or arranged post-hospital home care. Having this groundwork in place before surgery day removes one major source of stress during a period when energy and patience are both in short supply. Week 1: Managing Pain and Protecting the New Joint The first week home is almost always the most physically demanding part of recovery, even though activity levels are at their lowest. Pain, swelling, and fatigue are all expected, and the priority during this week is protecting the joint while staying on top of prescribed pain management. What’s typical during week one: Walking short distances with a walker or crutches, often just to the bathroom and back at first. Icing the joint regularly to control swelling, alongside prescribed medication. Doing basic prescribed exercises, usually gentle ankle pumps or short walks, several times a day. Needing help with almost everything: meals, bathing, dressing, and getting in and out of bed or a chair safely.…
